Premium All Grain Recipe Kit
Brew a bold, dry and deeply roasted stout with the Tullaroan Stout All Grain Recipe Kit from Border Brewing Supplies.
Tullaroan Stout combines elements of a Dry Irish Stout, Foreign Extra Stout and American Stout. It delivers light coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt flavours with firm bitterness, a smooth mouthfeel and dry finish.
Voyager VELORIA Schooner malt provides the base, while Voyager BISCUIT, flaked barley, CARAMUNICH® Type 3, chocolate malt, roast barley and CARAFA® Special Type 3 build layers of toasted bread, coffee, cocoa and roasted character.
CTZ hops provide clean, firm bitterness with subtle earthy, spicy and resinous character. Lallemand BRY-97 American West Coast Ale Yeast creates a clean fermentation profile and dry finish, allowing the roasted malt and hop bitterness to remain the focus.
At approximately 6% ABV and 49 IBU, Tullaroan Stout is full-flavoured and robust while remaining smooth, dry and surprisingly easy to drink.
Every Border Brewing recipe kit is freshly crushed and packed to order using quality brewing ingredients.

Flavour Profile
Tullaroan Stout pours nearly black with a dense tan head and an inviting aroma of roasted malt, coffee, cocoa and toasted bread.
Voyager VELORIA Schooner malt provides a clean base, while Voyager BISCUIT adds toasted bread and biscuit character. CARAMUNICH® Type 3 contributes subtle caramel and dark-fruit complexity.
Chocolate malt and roast barley provide coffee, cocoa and traditional stout roast flavours. CARAFA® Special Type 3 deepens the colour and adds smooth dark-malt character without introducing excessive harshness.
Flaked barley improves body, mouthfeel and head retention, helping the beer remain smooth despite its firm bitterness and dry finish.
The result is a robust yet easy-drinking stout with layered roasted-malt flavour, balanced bitterness and a clean finish.

Frequently Asked Questions
What style of stout is Tullaroan Stout?
Tullaroan Stout combines elements of three stout styles:
-
Dry Irish Stout
-
Foreign Extra Stout
-
American Stout
It has the dry finish and roasted character associated with an Irish Stout, the strength of a Foreign Extra Stout and the firm bitterness of an American Stout.
What does Tullaroan Stout taste like?
Tullaroan Stout features:
-
Roasted coffee
-
Dark chocolate
-
Cocoa
-
Toasted bread
-
Light caramel
-
Subtle dark fruit
-
Firm hop bitterness
The finish is dry and clean, preventing the beer from becoming heavy or overly sweet.
Is Tullaroan Stout very bitter?
Tullaroan Stout is calculated at approximately 49 IBU with a BU/GU ratio of 0.84.
This creates firm bitterness that balances the dark malt and supports the dry finish. It is more assertively bitter than a traditional low-strength Irish Dry Stout.
What hops are used?
The recipe uses Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus, commonly known as CTZ.
CTZ provides clean, efficient bitterness with subtle earthy, spicy and resinous character that works well in robust stouts and American-style dark beers.
Do I use the complete 25g of hops?
Yes. The complete 25g of CTZ hops is used in the recipe.
Follow the supplied Brewfather recipe for the correct quantity and timing of each addition.
What creates the dark colour?
The 67 EBC colour comes from a combination of:
-
Voyager Chocolate Malt
-
Roast Barley
-
Weyermann CARAFA® Special Type 3
-
Weyermann CARAMUNICH® Type 3
These malts create the nearly black appearance and layered coffee, cocoa, caramel and roasted flavours.
Why is flaked barley included?
Flaked barley improves mouthfeel, body and head retention.
It helps produce a smooth texture and dense tan head without adding excessive sweetness.
Is the grain freshly crushed?
Yes. The grain is freshly crushed before collection or dispatch unless otherwise requested.
Please allow a minimum of two business hours when ordering freshly crushed recipe kits for Click & Collect.
Which brewing systems is this recipe suitable for?
This recipe is suitable for:
-
Grainfather
-
BrewZilla
-
Guten
-
RoboBrew
-
Brew in a Bag systems
-
Traditional three-vessel systems
The recipe is calculated at 70% brewhouse efficiency and can be adjusted in Brewfather to suit your equipment.
What mash temperature should I use?
The recipe uses a single-infusion mash at 65°C for 60 minutes.
This relatively low mash temperature encourages good fermentability and helps produce the dry finish required for the recipe.
What fermentation temperature should I use?
The supplied fermentation profile gradually increases the temperature:
-
19°C for three days
-
20°C for one day
-
21°C for approximately four days
Always confirm fermentation is complete with stable gravity readings before cold crashing or packaging.
Does this kit include yeast?
Yes. The kit includes one packet of Lallemand BRY-97 American West Coast Ale Yeast.
BRY-97 provides a clean fermentation profile with high attenuation, allowing the roasted malt character and firm bitterness to remain prominent.
Can Tullaroan Stout be served with nitrogen?
Yes. Tullaroan Stout can be served using a stout tap and nitrogen blend for a dense, creamy head and smooth mouthfeel.
The supplied recipe targets 2.4 volumes of CO₂ for standard carbonation. Reduce the carbonation level appropriately if you intend to serve it through a nitrogen or mixed-gas stout system.
Can beginners brew Tullaroan Stout?
This recipe is suitable for brewers who have completed at least one all grain batch.
The mash and hop schedules are straightforward, but careful fermentation control and the correct hop quantities will produce the best result.

-
