Why Mill Your Own Brewing Grain?

Owning a home brew grain mill gives you much greater control over one of the most important parts of all grain brewing – your crush.

Different brewing systems can benefit from different crush settings. Being able to adjust your own mill lets you experiment with the balance between extract efficiency, wort flow and grain-bed filtration.

Milling immediately before brewing also means you can store malt whole and crush only what you need for each brew day.

For brewers regularly buying whole brewing grain, a quality malt mill quickly becomes an extremely useful piece of brewing equipment.

Adjustable 2 Roller Grain Mill

The Malt Muncher uses two cold-rolled steel rollers with an adjustable gap, allowing you to fine-tune the crush for your equipment and grain.

The rollers feature a 12 TPI knurl designed to efficiently grab the grain and draw it through the mill while helping retain the husk material needed to create an effective grain bed during lautering.

This makes the mill suitable for a wide range of all grain brewing systems, including:

  • Traditional 3-vessel brewing systems
  • Brew-in-a-Bag (BIAB)
  • All-in-one brewing systems
  • Mash tuns
  • Grainfather-style brewing systems
  • BrewZilla-style brewing systems

Your ideal mill gap will depend on the grain and brewing system being used, so there is no single perfect setting for every brewery.

Manual or Electric Drill Operation

The Malt Muncher includes a manual crank handle, so it can be operated straight out of the box without a motor.

Want to crush your grain faster?

Remove the hand crank and use a suitable electric drill on the 10mm crank shaft.

When powering the mill with a drill, use a slow speed of approximately 200 RPM. Running the rollers excessively fast can generate unnecessary heat and negatively affect milling performance.

2.7kg Grain Hopper

The included hopper holds approximately 2.7kg of grain, providing plenty of capacity for efficiently working through a typical home brew grain bill.

Simply refill the hopper as required while milling larger batches.

Base Mounting Board Included

This grain mill includes a base mounting board, providing a stable platform for positioning the mill over a suitable collection bucket or container.

The reinforced mill chassis also features pre-aligned mounting points for secure installation.

Suitable Brewing Grains

The Malt Muncher 2 Roller Grain Mill is designed for:

  • Malted barley
  • Malted wheat
  • Rye

It is an excellent choice for home brewers making everything from pale ales and IPAs through to lagers, stouts, wheat beers and all grain spirit washes.

Important: This mill is designed primarily for malted brewing grains. It is not intended for crushing hard grains such as corn.

Getting the Best Grain Crush

A good brewing crush should break open the grain kernels and expose the endosperm while avoiding unnecessarily pulverising the husks.

Too coarse a crush can reduce extraction efficiency, while an excessively fine crush can create lautering and wort-flow problems depending on your brewing system.

Start with a sensible gap for your brewing equipment, inspect the resulting crush and make small adjustments until you find the setting that works best for your brewery.

For BIAB systems, brewers can generally use a finer crush because the grain bag itself provides filtration. Traditional mash tuns often benefit from retaining more intact husk material to assist wort flow.
