Premium All Grain Recipe Kit
Brew a classic Czech Pilsner with rich malt character, smooth bitterness and distinctive spicy, herbal Saaz hop flavour.
Floor-malted Bohemian Pilsner malt provides a rounded, bready malt foundation, supported by small additions of Melanoidin, Carahell and Caraaroma malt for added depth, colour and complexity.
Traditional Saaz hops deliver the unmistakable spicy, earthy and herbal character of a Czech lager, while Hallertau Magnum provides clean, controlled bitterness. Lallemand Diamond Lager yeast produces a crisp, clean fermentation profile while preserving the beer’s rich malt character.
At approximately 5.0% ABV and 35 IBU, this recipe balances expressive Czech malt and hop flavours with a smooth, refreshing lager finish.
Each kit makes approximately 23 litres of beer and is packed to order by Border Brewing Supplies. Choose milled grain, freshly crushed for your brewing system, or unmilled grain for crushing at home.

Complete Brewfather recipe and brewing specifications
Choose to have your grain freshly milled and packed to order or supplied unmilled for crushing at home.
The kit supplies a 25g packet of Hallertau Magnum, but the recipe requires only 12g. Follow the supplied Brewfather recipe and retain the remaining approximately 13g for another brew.
The complete supplied 100g packet of Saaz is used in the recipe.
Whirlfloc, Servomyces yeast nutrient and brewing-water salts are shown in the recipe but are available separately.
Hop Schedule
-
12g Hallertau Magnum at 60 minutes
-
50g Saaz at 30 minutes
-
50g Saaz at 5 minutes
Do not use the entire 25g packet of Hallertau Magnum. Adding the full packet would make the finished beer considerably more bitter than intended.

Frequently Asked Questions
What style of beer is this recipe?
This recipe produces a Czech Premium Pale Lager inspired by the rich malt character, smooth bitterness and traditional Saaz hop flavour associated with classic Czech pilsners.
What does Czech Pilsner taste like?
Expect rounded bread and malt flavours supported by light caramel, gentle toast and distinctive spicy, herbal Saaz hops.
The bitterness is firm but smooth, creating a flavourful lager that remains balanced and refreshing.
How is Czech Pilsner different from German Pilsner?
Czech Pilsner generally has a richer and rounder malt profile, a slightly fuller body and a softer bitterness.
German Pilsner is normally paler, drier and more sharply bitter, while Czech Pilsner places greater emphasis on Bohemian malt and spicy Saaz hop flavour.
Can I choose whether my grain is milled or unmilled?
Yes. Choose freshly milled grain, crushed and packed to order by Border Brewing Supplies, or unmilled grain if you prefer to crush it yourself.
Do I use the entire 25g packet of Hallertau Magnum?
No. The recipe requires only 12g of Hallertau Magnum at the beginning of the 60-minute boil.
Approximately 13g will remain unused. Follow the supplied Brewfather recipe carefully because adding the entire packet would produce substantially more bitterness than intended.
Do I use all 100g of Saaz?
Yes. The complete 100g packet is used:
-
50g with 30 minutes remaining in the boil
-
50g with 5 minutes remaining in the boil
Why are two packets of Diamond Lager yeast included?
Lager fermentation requires a larger yeast pitch than most ales. Two packets provide a healthier fermentation, reliable attenuation and the clean lager character required by the recipe.
What temperature should I use for fermentation?
Begin fermentation at approximately 11°C. Once primary fermentation is nearly complete, raise the temperature to 17°C for a two-day diacetyl rest.
Always confirm fermentation is complete with stable gravity readings before cold-conditioning or packaging.
Does Czech Pilsner need to be lagered?
Cold-conditioning is strongly recommended. Lagering improves clarity and helps the malt, hop and fermentation characteristics become smoother and more refined.
What brewing systems can I use?
This recipe is suitable for most all grain brewing systems, including:
-
Grainfather
-
BrewZilla
-
Guten
-
RoboBrew
-
Brew in a Bag systems
-
Traditional three-vessel systems
The recipe is calculated at 70% brewhouse efficiency and can be adjusted in Brewfather to suit your equipment.
Are Whirlfloc and Servomyces included?
No. Whirlfloc, Servomyces yeast nutrient and brewing-water salts are shown in the Brewfather recipe but are available separately.
Is this recipe suitable for beginners?
This recipe is best suited to brewers who have completed at least one all grain batch and can maintain cool fermentation temperatures.
The step mash requires several temperature changes, but the complete Brewfather recipe provides the necessary temperatures and timings.
How much beer does the recipe make?
The recipe is designed to produce approximately 23 litres of finished beer at 70% brewhouse efficiency.
