How Does a Distilling Parrot Work?
Distillate flows from the condenser into the collection chamber of the copper parrot.
A compatible alcometer floats inside the chamber and provides a continuous indication of the alcohol strength as the chamber fills and distillate flows through it.
The distillate then exits through the parrot outlet and into your collection vessel.

Always confirm that your condenser outlet, tubing arrangement and available bench space are suitable before use.
Setting Up the Copper Parrot
Position the parrot securely on a stable, level benchtop beside your still.
Direct the distillate from the condenser into the parrot’s collection cone, or connect the parrot collection pipe to the condenser’s distillate outlet tube.
Insert a compatible alcometer into the parrot chamber and position a suitable collection vessel beneath the outlet.
Confirm that all components are stable and that the distillate can flow freely before beginning collection.

A compatible alcometer is required and is not included with the copper parrot.
The unit accommodates alcometers measuring less than 23mm in diameter and reads no higher than 252mm from the base of the alcometer.
Alcoholmeter readings are affected by liquid temperature. Apply the appropriate temperature correction when an accurate ABV measurement is required.

The parrot provides a continuous indication of the distillate’s alcohol strength. Because the collection chamber holds a volume of liquid, readings will respond progressively as the strength of the incoming distillate changes.
Why is temperature correction important?
Most alcometers are calibrated at a specified temperature, commonly 20°C. Distillate collected at a different temperature may require correction to determine its accurate ABV.
