Award-Winning Australian Pilsner-Style Base Malt

Brew crisp, pale and highly fermentable beer with Voyager Craft Malt Atlas Latrobe. Produced in the Riverina region of New South Wales, this Australian base malt is made from low-protein Latrobe barley and designed as a lighter continental-style pale malt for lagers and lighter ales.

Atlas delivers clean, fresh and subtle malt character with delicate grain, fresh hay and light grassy notes. Its very pale colour, high extract, strong enzyme activity and high fermentability make it an excellent base for Pilsner, Pale Lager, Kölsch, Blonde Ale, Saison, XPA and modern hop-forward beer.

Voyager Atlas received international recognition when it won gold in the Pale Malt category at the 2025 Malt Cup. It is a genuinely Australian alternative to imported continental Pilsner malt, providing excellent brewhouse performance and a clean base that allows yeast and hop character to shine.

Brewing Tips

Voyager Atlas can be used at up to 100% of the grain bill in Pilsner, Pale Lager, Kölsch, Blonde Ale, Saison and other light beer styles.

For crisp lagers, use Atlas as the primary base malt and mash around 63–65°C to promote a highly fermentable wort and dry finish.

Mash around 65–67°C when brewing Pale Ale, XPA or IPA where slightly more body is desired to balance hop bitterness and aroma.

Its strong enzyme activity makes Atlas suitable for grain bills containing rice, corn, wheat or other adjuncts with limited enzyme activity.

Because Atlas is very pale and clean, it also works well with small additions of Vienna, Munich or light crystal malt when more colour and malt depth are required.

A full-length boil and healthy fermentation practices are recommended when producing very pale lagers from lightly kilned malt.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Voyager Atlas Latrobe Malt?

Voyager Atlas is an Australian Pilsner-style base malt made from low-protein Latrobe barley. It is designed for crisp lagers and lighter ales that require pale colour, high fermentability and clean malt flavour.

Where is Voyager Atlas Malt made?

It is produced by Voyager Craft Malt in the Riverina region of New South Wales using Australian-grown barley.

What flavours does Atlas Malt add?

Atlas provides clean, subtle pale malt flavour with delicate notes of fresh grain, cereal, hay and light grass. It is intentionally restrained so hop and yeast character can remain prominent.

What beer styles can I brew with Atlas Malt?

It is particularly suitable for Pilsner, Pale Lager, Helles, Kölsch-style beer, Blonde Ale, Saison, XPA, Pale Ale, IPA and other crisp or pale beer styles.

Can Voyager Atlas be used as a base malt?

Yes. Atlas is a fully modified base malt with strong enzyme activity and can make up 100% of the grain bill.

How is Atlas different from traditional pale ale malt?

Atlas is generally paler, cleaner and more fermentable than traditional pale ale malt. Pale ale malt usually contributes more biscuit and bread flavour, while Atlas produces a lighter continental Pilsner-style profile.

Is Atlas Latrobe the same as Pilsner Malt?

It performs a similar role and is designed as a continental Pilsner-style malt. Atlas offers a distinctly Australian, small-batch alternative made from locally grown barley.

Is Voyager Atlas suitable for distilling?

Yes. Its high extract, strong enzyme activity and high fermentability make it suitable for whisky, neutral spirits and other all grain distilling applications.

Has Voyager Atlas won any awards?

Yes. Voyager Atlas won gold in the Pale Malt category at the 2025 Malt Cup, an international competition organised by the Craft Maltsters Guild.
