Unlike loose activated carbon, the solid carbon cartridge is clean to handle, easy to install and delivers consistent filtration performance every batch.

Each cartridge is capable of filtering:

• One complete batch from a 25L still
• Up to 8 litres of spirit at 40–50% ABV
• Up to 300 litres of water

It is not designed for the Air Still Carbon Filter System, which uses different cartridges.

Why Filter Distilled Spirits?

Even well-made neutral spirit can contain trace congeners and fermentation by-products that affect aroma and flavour.

Activated carbon works by adsorbing many of these unwanted compounds onto its highly porous surface as the spirit slowly passes through the cartridge.

The result is a cleaner, smoother spirit that's ideal for flavouring with whisky, bourbon, rum, vodka or gin essences.

How the EZ Carbon Cartridge Works

The cartridge is manufactured from compressed activated carbon containing millions of microscopic pores.

As diluted spirit slowly flows through the cartridge:

• unwanted flavours are adsorbed
• undesirable aromas are reduced
• cleaner spirit exits the filter ready for flavouring or ageing

Unlike loose carbon, there's no measuring, rinsing large quantities or messy clean-up afterwards.

How To Use

1. Fit the cartridge into your EZ Filter System or EZ Inline Filter.
2. Install the foam filter washers.
3. Dilute distilled spirit to approximately 40–50% ABV before filtering.
4. Allow the spirit to pass slowly through the cartridge using gravity.
5. Discard the cartridge after completing one batch.

For best performance, Still Spirits recommends replacing the cartridge after each batch.

Border Brewing Pro Tip

For the cleanest neutral spirit, allow your spirit to cool to room temperature and dilute it to 40–50% ABV before filtration. Carbon filtration is significantly more effective at this strength than with high-proof alcohol. Always use a fresh cartridge for each batch to maintain consistent results.
