Faster Force Carbonation for Ball Lock Kegs

Carbonate beer, cider, soft drinks and sparkling water faster with this carbonation keg lid and 0.5 micron diffusion stone.

Instead of introducing CO₂ into the headspace, the stainless steel diffusion stone releases fine bubbles directly into the liquid. This increases the contact area between the gas and beverage, helping CO₂ dissolve more efficiently and reducing carbonation time.

The complete assembly includes a stainless steel keg lid, ball lock gas post, silicone lid seal, 60cm hose and stainless steel carbonation stone.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Helps carbonate kegged beverages faster

  • Releases fine CO₂ bubbles directly into the liquid

  • 0.5 micron stainless steel diffusion stone

  • Stainless steel ball lock gas post

  • Includes approximately 60cm of connecting hose

  • Fits compatible Cornelius-style ball lock kegs

  • Can be transferred between kegs as required

  • Suitable for beer, cider, sparkling water and other kegged drinks

  • Reduces the need to shake or roll the keg

How Does a Carbonation Keg Lid Work?

A standard keg sends CO₂ into the headspace above the beverage. This carbonation lid sends the gas through a hose to a diffusion stone positioned inside the keg.

The 0.5 micron stone produces many fine bubbles beneath the surface. These bubbles provide greater contact between the CO₂ and liquid, allowing the gas to dissolve more quickly and evenly.

How to Use

Clean and sanitise the complete carbonation lid assembly before use.

Install the lid onto a compatible keg and make sure the diffusion stone is submerged in the beverage. Connect your CO₂ supply to the ball lock gas post on the lid.

Begin with the regulator set to a low pressure. Gradually increase the pressure in small increments until gas begins passing through the diffusion stone. Continue adjusting according to the beverage temperature and your desired carbonation level.

Cold liquid absorbs CO₂ more efficiently, so the best results are achieved when the keg and beverage have been thoroughly chilled.

After carbonation, the lid can remain installed or be cleaned, sanitised and transferred to another compatible keg.

How Quickly Will It Carbonate a Keg?

A diffusion stone can carbonate a chilled keg considerably faster than adding CO₂ through the keg headspace alone.

The exact time depends on beverage temperature, applied pressure, keg volume, desired carbonation level and whether the diffusion stone is fully submerged. Some carbonation methods may produce results in less than an hour, while slower controlled carbonation can be performed over a longer period.

What Pressure Should I Use?

Start at a low pressure and gradually increase it in approximately 2–3 PSI increments. The stone requires enough pressure to overcome its wetting pressure before bubbles begin passing through it.

Avoid immediately applying excessive pressure. Use a carbonation chart and adjust for the temperature and carbonation level required by your beverage.

Can It Be Used for Sparkling Water?

Yes. The fine diffusion stone makes this lid particularly useful for carbonating water, soft drinks and other beverages that require a higher level of carbonation.

Will It Fit Every Ball Lock Keg?

It is designed for compatible Cornelius-style ball lock kegs with a standard oval lid opening. Some keg brands and unusual keg designs may use different lid dimensions, so check compatibility before purchasing.

Can I Move It Between Different Kegs?

Yes. The carbonation lid can be cleaned, sanitised and transferred between compatible kegs as needed. This allows one carbonation lid to service several kegs.

Do I Need to Shake the Keg?

No. The diffusion stone creates fine bubbles inside the beverage, reducing the need to shake or roll the keg to speed up carbonation.

How Should I Clean the Diffusion Stone?

Rinse the stone promptly after use and soak it in a suitable brewery cleaner to remove beverage residue. Rinse thoroughly, sanitise and allow it to dry before storage.

Avoid touching the porous stone with greasy or oily hands, as oils can block the tiny openings and reduce gas flow.

Can It Be Used with Nitrogen?

A diffusion stone may also assist with dissolving nitrogen or mixed beer gas into suitable beverages. Nitrogen behaves differently from CO₂ and may require different pressures, equipment and serving conditions.

Always ensure your keg, regulator and other components are rated for the pressure being used.
