Bentonite 100g
The Miracle Clay
It is very effective in dragging out yeast, tannins and other stubborn protein-based particles that may want to linger after fermentation. The result is a wine, mead etc with a glassy clear appearance and a colour that is radiant.
For a 5 litre batch of wine or mead : 2.5 to 5 grams of bentonite
That works out to roughly : 0.5 to 1g per litre
Light fining: 2.5 – 3g per 5L
Cloudy/stubborn batch: 4–5g per 5L
Instructions:
Mix the bentonite first in warm water
Use about 10–20 times its weight in water
Let it hydrate for a few hours, or overnight if you can
Stir it into the mead/wine well
Leave it several days to a week to settle
Rack off the sediment
Important note:
Too much bentonite can strip aroma and flavour, especially in mead
Mead often needs a bit less than grape wine, so I’d usually start around 2.5–3g for 5 Litres
Bentonite is an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate clay consisting mainly of montmorillonite, formed from volcanic ash. Known as "The Miracle Clay," it is widely used for industrial sealing, drilling mud, skincare, and agricultural soil improvement due to its high swelling capacity, adsorption properties.
