Premium All Grain Recipe Kit

Brew a bright, dry and highly drinkable Belgian ale with the Trappist Single Belgian Recipe Kit from Border Brewing Supplies.

Also known as a Belgian Single or monastery-style table beer, this pale Belgian ale combines a soft pilsner malt base with Styrian Goldings hops, clear Belgian candi syrup and expressive Lallemand Abbaye yeast. The result is a golden, highly attenuated beer with fruity and peppery yeast character, spicy-floral hops and a crisp, bitter finish.

At approximately 5.4% ABV, it delivers the distinctive fermentation character and lively carbonation associated with stronger Belgian ales in a lighter, more refreshing beer.

Every Border Brewing recipe kit is freshly crushed and packed to order using quality brewing ingredients.

Flavour Profile

This Belgian Single pours pale gold with a persistent, billowy white head and lively carbonation.

The pilsner malt creates a soft grainy, bready base, supported by delicate biscuit and light honey-like notes. Styrian Goldings hops provide firm bitterness with spicy, floral and lightly earthy character.

Lallemand Abbaye yeast contributes expressive Belgian fruit esters and peppery spice, while clear Belgian candi syrup encourages a highly attenuated fermentation and crisp finish.

The result is fruity, spicy, hoppy and dry, with enough malt character to remain balanced without becoming sweet or heavy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Belgian Single?

A Belgian Single is a pale, dry, bitter and highly carbonated Belgian ale. It combines a restrained grainy malt base with spicy-floral hops and expressive fruity, peppery Belgian yeast character.

The style was traditionally associated with lower-strength beers produced for consumption within monasteries. It may also be called a monastery beer, monk’s beer, patersbier or Trappist Single-style ale.

Is this an authentic Trappist beer?

This is a homebrew recipe inspired by the Belgian Single style associated with Trappist and monastic brewing traditions.

The Trappist name is a protected designation reserved for qualifying products made under recognised Trappist monastery conditions. This recipe kit is not produced by or affiliated with a Trappist monastery.

Is a Belgian Single similar to a Tripel?

It shares the pale colour, dry finish, high carbonation and fruity-spicy yeast character of a Belgian Tripel, but it is considerably lower in alcohol.

A Belgian Single is also generally more hop-forward and less sweet, making it lighter and easier to drink.

Is this beer sweet?

No. The pilsner malt and candi syrup can create an initial impression of soft grain and light honey, but the beer is designed to finish very dry.

The predicted final gravity is 1.006, with firm hop bitterness balancing the malt and yeast character.

Why is Belgian candi syrup included?

Clear Belgian candi syrup provides fermentable sugar without adding heavy malt flavour or colour.

It helps increase attenuation, lighten the body and create the crisp, dry finish expected in a Belgian Single. This kit supplies 500g across two packets.

Do I use the complete 100g of hops?

Yes. The recipe uses the complete 100g of Styrian Goldings:

  • 40g with 60 minutes remaining

  • 40g with 30 minutes remaining

  • 20g with 5 minutes remaining

Follow the supplied Brewfather recipe for the complete brewing schedule.

Is the grain freshly crushed?

Yes. The grain is freshly crushed before collection or dispatch unless otherwise requested.

Please allow a minimum of two business hours when ordering freshly crushed recipe kits for Click & Collect.

Which brewing systems is this recipe suitable for?

This recipe is suitable for:

  • Grainfather

  • BrewZilla

  • Guten

  • RoboBrew

  • Brew in a Bag systems

  • Traditional three-vessel systems

The recipe is calculated at 70% brewhouse efficiency and can be adjusted in Brewfather to suit your brewing equipment.

What fermentation temperature should I use?

The supplied fermentation profile begins at 20°C and gradually increases:

  • 20°C for two days

  • 21°C for two days

  • 22°C for two days

  • 23°C for approximately four days

This gradual increase encourages full attenuation while developing the desired Belgian fruit and spice character.

Always confirm fermentation is complete with stable gravity readings before packaging.

What carbonation level should I use?

The recipe targets approximately 3.0 volumes of CO₂, producing the lively carbonation and persistent white head associated with Belgian Single.

Ensure your bottles, keg and dispensing equipment are suitable for the selected carbonation pressure.

Can beginners brew this recipe?

Yes, provided you have completed an all grain brew before and can maintain the recommended fermentation temperature.

The grain bill and single-temperature mash are straightforward. Careful fermentation control and adequate carbonation are the keys to producing the intended Belgian character.
